2008/06/27 - St. Louis, MO – The LA County Library System stayed true to their vision of being an industry leader in the use of technology by transitioning to a state of the art online kiosk solution for recovering photocopying costs.

CMS has partnered with ITC Systems and Comprise Technologies to provide a card solution that includes the installation of 94 card operated controllers across 84 libraries in the LA County system. These units will replace the current model coin operated controllers. LA County Library made the switch to an online, card-based solution because it shortens the lineup and congestion at the front desk, as people no longer ask for change.

Library members can use their card to activate the copier and settle with the front desk later, as they would with a late fee on an overdue book. If guests of the library don’t have a card they can insert money in the kiosk, which produces a receipt that can be used to activate the copier. In either situation, the number of copies is recorded to the library’s records for easy reconciliation.

“This solution makes it easier for the library patron because photocopying is now tied to the library card account,” notes John Brumfield, Director of Sales for ITC Systems. “As we move toward a cashless society, it is imperative that our institutions offer alternative methods of payment. We simply don’t carry coins with us anymore.”The County of Los Angeles Public Library was established in 1912 under authority of the County Free Library Act. Today it is one of the major libraries in the United States, and provides library service to over 3.5 million residents living in unincorporated areas and to residents of 51 of the 88 incorporated cities of Los Angeles County. The service area extends over 3,000 square miles.
